FROM MIKE’S DESK

If you’ve been following along with my posts here, you would have seen me posting about our backyard patio and the work we’ve been doing to get it complete. Working with stone gives me a perspective I couldn’t gain any other way. It helps me see our products through the eyes of the people who install them every day. It gives me the ability to consider the process and how installers (both masons and landscapers) interact with the stone and the ancillary products needed to complete a project. It also helps keep me level-headed and appreciative of those that purposely chose to work with Buechel Stone products.

Yes, this patio was a process, but I did find myself appreciating the experience in a whole new way. Every piece has its own shape, texture, and character. There’s no assembly line or shortcut. Each piece asks you to slow down, study it, turn it, and discover where it naturally belongs.

The experience also reminded me how special natural stone truly is. We work with it every day, so it’s easy to think of it as just another product. But when you stop and consider its story, you realize it is anything but ordinary. Every piece of stone existed for millions of years. It has been part of the history of our planet long before our homes, our communities, or even civilization itself. We are mindful that it is one of nature’s oldest building materials. It is a gift no one should take for granted.

To me, that’s what makes natural stone so remarkable. We give it a new purpose as part of a home where birthdays will be celebrated, conversations will be shared, and generations of memories will unfold. The patio you install today will tell stories generations from now. It helped me realize that patios should never be taken for granted or overlooked on a project. No one remembers the square footage. Most won’t remember the exact stone. They remember grilling on the Fourth of July. It being a haven from mosquitoes as kids catch fireflies, morning coffee with your loved ones, and conversations that lasted long after the sun went down. That’s why stone matters. It becomes the stage where life happens.

I hope you’re finding time this summer to slow down, spend time with the people who matter most, and appreciate not only the beauty around you, but also the craftsmanship and care that made it possible.

JULY WEBINAR RECAP – Mastering 3-Part Specifications

In July, we made sure to keep it festive as we discussed Mastering 3-Part Specifications. While specifications may not always be the most exciting topic, they’re one of the most important tools for turning great design into successful construction.

Since the webinar took place during America’s 250th anniversary celebration, I couldn’t resist having a little fun with the occasion. I even dressed the part! It was a reminder that professional education doesn’t have to be formal and stuffy.

Beautiful projects may capture our attention, but it’s the people behind them who truly deserve recognition. That’s the inspiration behind Stone Journal’s latest article, Shop Talk.

Every exceptional project begins long before the first piece of stone is installed. It starts with conversations. An architect sharing a vision. A designer refining the details. A builder solving challenges. A mason bringing years of experience to every placement. A homeowner trusting the team to create something that will become part of their family’s story.

Great projects aren’t created by one person—they’re built through collaboration. Shop Talk celebrates the talented people behind the details of cut-to-size stone. It’s a reminder that while natural stone may be what we see when a project is complete, the relationships, craftsmanship, and shared expertise behind the scenes are what truly make it remarkable. Technology will continue to move our industry forward, but it should never replace the people whose experience, craftsmanship, and attention to detail make exceptional projects possible, who care about each project, work through the finest detail, and create the unique – from hand-finishes and custom packaging to spotting fractions of an inch errors or an inconsistent finish. There are stone companies that can take most human interaction out, but if you are looking for anything custom, the human eye and interaction can’t be replaced.

CLOSING THOUGHT

We’re surrounded every day by thoughtfully designed spaces, yet it’s easy to walk past them without considering the people, craftsmanship, and care that made them possible.
